Innovative in Cardiology

SOLVAY PHARMACEUTICALS IS DETERMINED TO ATTAIN PROMINENT PRESENCE IN THE FIELD WHERE THE WORLD'S NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF DEATH IS FOUND, THE CARDIOVASCULAR AREA. FOR THEM, PROGRESS NEVER ENDS. THEIR COMMITMENT TO CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH THEREFORE IS SOLID: 15% OF THE R&D BUDGET IS INVESTED IN THIS AREA. IMPORTANT RESULTS HAVE ALREADY BEEN ACHIEVED. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW ANTIHYPERTENSIVE MOXONIDINE physiotens® / Cynt® REPRESENTS THE FIRST MAJOR STEP INTO THE CHALLENGING FIELD OF CARDIO VASCULAR MEDICINE.

Essential Hypertension remains a major source of cardiovascular morbidity in many nations.
With physiotens® / Cynt® Solvay Pharma-ceuticals is currently introducing an innovative solution: a drug with a revolutionary mechanism of action working through the sympathetic system. High sympathetic output is one of the underlying reasons for Essential Hypertension. physiotens® / Cynt® addresses the newly discovered imidazoline type 1 receptor, a trigger for sympathetic outflow regulation. Thus a drug has been created that comes closer to a causal treatment. The sympatholytic effect of physiotens® / Cynt® reduces high blood pressure via reduction of peripheral vascular resistance and offers cardio protection. Positive effects on other cardiovascular risk factors are expected.
Another innovative solution from Solvay Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of essential hypertension is TEVETEN®.
TEVETEN® (Eprosartan Mesylate) is an Angiotensin II Antagonist with a dual mechanism of action. It binds to the Angiotensin II receptors type I, and thus decreases blood pressure by decreasing vasoconstriction. It also binds to the presynaptic Angiotensin I receptors and therefore decreases further release of norepinephrine from those nerve endings.
TEVETEN® (Eprosartan Mesylate) binds competitively to Angiotensin II receptors.
This competitive binding allows TEVETEN® (Eprosartan Mesylate) to be shifted away from the Angiotensin II receptors whenever necessary (large amounts of Angiotensin II being produced following a drop in blood pressure). The best clinical application being in case of drug or non-drug induced hypotension during treatment. In hypotension, TEVETEN® (Eprosartan Mesylate) will be displaced from the Angiotensin II receptors and allow restoration of normal blood pressure. The other clinical implication is the displacement of TEVETEN® (Eprosartan Mesylate) from the Angiotensin II receptors on the efferent arteriole, allowing Angiotensin II to bind to the receptors on the efferent arteriole, leading to a vasoconstriction of this glomerular artery and allowing good glomerular filtration rate during hypotension (Kidney and nephron protection).

Scientific Interaction

Through innovative research, the pharma-ceutical industry often stimulates new understanding of disease processes. Inquiry into the working mechanism of new compounds can lead to more knowledge about the disease it has to treat. A clear example is the class of imidazoline receptors that was discovered when researching how physiotens® / Cynt® exerted its blood pressure reducing effect. This shed light on the true role of the sympathetic system in hypertension.
Moreover, through binding to the Angiotensin II receptors type I, TEVETEN® (Eprosartan Mesylate) thus reduces blood pressure by decreasing vasoconstriction. So, it is indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension.

Focus on Research

TEVETEN®(Eprosartan Mesylate), is next on the market after physiotens® / Cynt® (moxonidine). And that is only the beginning. Solvay Pharmaceuticals health companies cardiology research is focused on the areas of ischaemic heart disease and congestive heart failure, and has highly promising compounds in the pipeline.
